Concerts ring in holidays and support non-profit organizations

The Las Cruces Ukes
The Las Cruces Ukes will perform December 14 and 21.
There are plenty of holiday concerts this month to provide a fun respite from the hectic holiday season. Some are free and some have a reasonable fee supporting non-profits. Cheers!

• Join KRWG for a festive evening with the El Paso Brass Seasonal Celebration Concert at 7 p.m., Thursday, December 7, at the Rio Grande Theatre. The concert benefits KRWG, and the El Paso Brass with their traditional music and new favorites to get you in the holiday mood.

Tickets are available online; at the Rio Grande box office; The Cutter Gallery at University Avenue and El Paseo; and at the KRWG studios in Milton Hall on the NMSU campus. Tickets are only $15 until the night of the concert, which is fun for the entire family.

• The Mesilla Valley Chorale, directed by Nancy Ritchey, presents Joy, a holiday concert, on December 10, 3 p.m. at the Rio Grande Theatre. Songs include “The Very Best Time of Year” by John Rutter, “Believe” from Polar Express, “African Alleluia,” “Coventry Child,” and “Hanukkah Wish,” featuring Gabriella Alvarez on flute. Enjoy a holiday sing-along and much more. Tickets are still only $10, with open seating.

• The Young at Heart Chorus will present a free Christmas concert at the Good Samaritan Auditorium, 3011 Buena Vida Circle, Las Cruces at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, December 14. The one-hour choral program will feature songs of the holiday season, including carols, festive songs, and other fun music. The performance is open to the public without charge.

Young at Heart entertains residents of assisted living and nursing homes in the Las Cruces area and has been in continuous operation since 1972, with the name of the group, the director, piano accompanist and venues changing through the years. Currently there are about 25 members, who practice two or three times and sing at four facilities each month. Music changes monthly, selected from a large collection of old songs, generally favorites of the audience and the chorus. Programs are enhanced by varying the themes and by highlighting the talents of individual members with vocal solos or duets, group harmony, and instrumental accompaniment.
