Events and meetings support healthy lifestyle in Cruces

• Adult Diabetes Educational Support Group meetings take place the first Tuesday of each month from 6 – 7:30 p.m. at MountainView Senior Circle Association, 3948 E. Lohman Ave, Suite 1, game room (Behind Walgreens on Lohman).

The Adult Diabetes Educational Support Group meeting with a healthy cooking demonstration takes place the third Thursday of each month from 10 to 11:15 a.m. at Natural Grocers meeting room, 3970 E. Lohman. Diabetes Educational Support Group meetings providing open discussion and short teaching regarding diabetes, and a question and answer period.

In addition, applications are being accepted for Adult Diabetes Classes. Call or e-mail your reservations to snmdo@snmdo.com or by calling 522-0289. Class size will be limited to 10 to 12 and support persons are invited, and encouraged, to be present with each attendee.

• The City of Las Cruces Parks & Recreation Department will begin the summer session of its Group Riding Program in May. The program is for residents who want to bicycle for exercise as a group. It is intended for the 50 plus community, but anyone 18 and older is welcome to participate.

Rides begin Monday, May 1, at Frank O’Brien Papen Community Center, 304 W. Bell Ave. Riders may register at the center anytime during operational hours, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Rides will be Mondays starting at 9:15 a.m. Each riding day will have a set distance and destination. Rides range from 12 – 20 miles and may be cancelled due to weather.

All routes will be local, utilizing city bike paths and roads. Participants will be required to provide their own bikes, helmets, patch kits, water, snacks, and other items needed for each excursion. Bikes with multiple gears (road and hybrid) are required for all routes and rides as the group travels at the speed of 12 – 18 m.p.h. Cost per outing is $2 per participant and $1 for seniors 60 and older.

• The Breast Cancer Support Group of the Community Foundation meets the fourth Saturday of each month from 10 – 11:30 a.m. at Memorial Medical Center Annex Building, 2450 S. Telshor, located on the west side of the main entrance (look for signage). Each month’s speaker and topic varies. Meetings are free, no registration is required, and they are open to all who are interested in health and wellness. For more information, call 524-4373.
