The Rio Grande Theatre will be the home to Passion in August, presented by the Scaffolding Theatre Company and featuring favorite local performers. In addition, Astrid Morales will give a free performance on August 28, presented by the Consulate General of Mexico in El Paso and the City of Las Cruces. Sally Quillin’s work will be on display at the El Paso Electric Gallery to round out your visit to this lovely theatre.
Friday, August 7, 5 – 7 p.m.: Artist reception for August
The regular monthly artists’ reception, taking place in the El Paso Electric Gallery from 5 to 7 p.m. during the Downtown Ramble, will feature the vibrant acrylics and watercolors of Sally Quillin of Quillin-Stephens Gallery. Quillin, a professional artist and art teacher, uses color to express her emotional and physical reactions to a variety of subject matter, thus expressing what she cannot say in words. Every month the Doña Ana Arts Council welcomes local artists to exhibit in the El Paso Electric Gallery in the lobby of the Rio Grande Theatre. Tuesday, August 18, 6:30 p.m.: Every Other Tuesday: Preview of the musical Passion
Presented by Scaffolding Theatre Company in anticipation of the following weekend’s performance of Stephen Sondheim’s Passion, local diva Megan McQueen will give a taste of what is in store for ticket holders. The Doña Ana Arts Council and Scaffolding Theatre Company bring Stephen Sondheim’s intensely emotionally one-act chamber opera and 1994 Tony Award-winner for Best Musical to the Rio Grande Theatre stage, starring NYU MFA grad and former local Isaac Quiroga, local favorites Amanda Bradford, Jamie Gier and Megan McQueen and pianist David Cunniff under the direction of Justin Lucero. Showtimes for Passion are 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday; 3 p.m. Sunday. Doors open one half hour before show time. Tickets are $17 assigned seating and $22 premium assigned seating. Winner of the 2014 General Concerto Competition of the Meadows School of Arts, Mexican pianist Astrid Morales is a graduate of the National Conservatory of Music in Mexico City who has performed throughout Mexico, the United States and Canada. Her presentation at the Rio Grande Theatre will include interpretations of great works by Beethoven, Schumann and Castro, among others. Ms. Morales is presented by the Consulate General of Mexico in El Paso and the City of Las Cruces. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.; presentation begins at 7 p.m. All ages; admission is free to the public on a first come, first seated basis. No ticket is necessary for admission.
